What is better than the whole in the doughnut?

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Well as you may have guessed, THG did not post anything this past week but no worries I have lots of material from a recent trip to the Pacific Northwest. Where to start and what to inform? The trip out was not of any note except when you wake up at 3:15am to drive to the airport and don’t have your first cup of coffee until 6am you know it was going to a full day.

Yes, the magic is in the hole!

Yes, the magic is in the hole!

For those of you who have not been to the Pacific Northwest it is a convergence of tectonic plates, ocean currents, dynamic weather systems and laid-back people. Yep, it is pretty cool out there. Over the course of the long weekend we made a day down the eclectic hamlet of Portland, Oregon for a view of the city and some doughnuts. Other food was enjoyed in Portland, but often the first meal of a day is the most memorable. This doughnut excursion started with a morning drive, a search for a parking space and then a 30 minute wait for the greatest doughnuts in the world. And yes that is not hyperbole, Voodoo Doughnut makes the greatest doughnuts (or donuts) in the world. What exactly made these doughnuts so great, you inquire? Well they serve doughnuts topped with such delicacies as Fruit Loops or Captain Crunch and bacon, yes bacon!

Being a child of the 80’s I had to go with the Captain My Captain, or in layman’s terms a Captain Crunch covered doughnut. A chocolate glazed accompanied the Captain My Captain, but only to be eaten later because the Crunch covered doughnut was too rich and sugary to for anything else.  A rich cup of Guatemalan coffee helped wash this sugary treat down and THG was running in the red for the next two hours like a hopped up 8yr old. But one thing was reaffirmed after this doughnut experience, “The Magic is in the Hole”!

You done, Eat!
