Beware lowly coastal dwellers, hurricane season officially begins today! And the tropical depression that formed last week off the coast of South Carolina unofficially did not exist. June 1st is the official start of the Atlantic basin (Western Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean Sea) activity season as determined by the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center. This is also the unofficial beginning to the “summer surf jones” along the East Coast. Ahh, a beautiful and simultaneously frustrating time for many surfers who have laid out coin for new summer boards only to watch them gather dust until there is a hint of a storm. I myself, have done some work to update the ole’ surfwagon for surf treks to visit the Big Blue.

The Surfwagon
However, it is also a time to prepare yourself for those other summer hobbies and activities that are not dependant on whims, bellows and rhythms of Mother Ocean. Alas we all live and die by the tide…. Fishing is one way to make use of these long summer days and warm summer nights. Of course there are numerous summer activities one can pursue on a random summer day like tubing, swimming, grillin’ or drinking a beer or three. As for those activities they will subjects for a later post. If you are unprepared for summer fishing or other water foraging it does not take much time to do some self-educating to get ready to “slay some fish”. But hey what if you don’t have any fish slaying equipment? Recently THG went out and purchased a new rod and reel for the summer. When looking to purchase a new rod it is best to keep in mind as to what your target fish may be, and in that respect what kind of fish do you like to eat. If you are going for freshwater species it is helpful to visit your state Department of Natural Resources webpage or a local fishing shop to get the scoop on what is biting in or near your area. If you are more in the mood for a saltwater or offshore fishing it is smart to call up the nearest charter and check with the true experts!
For the next few weeks and months I’m going try and work out my favorite freshwater fish recipes and “Slay some fish”!
